Podcast User Engagement Cycle

by

Yesterday, I attended a blogging conference held at De Montfort University. One of the speakers was Meg Pickard formerly of AOL Europe and now Head of Communities and User Experience at The Guardian. I loved her speechand although she was talking to bloggers, the principles are just as relevant to podcasting. She talked about an engagement cycle which you is a great way to understand how to increase your listener base.

1) Casual Listeners

People at first stop by, they find you through links or search but they pop in to look at what you are doing.

2) Connected

This is when people start making light comments, sign up for the content via the RSS feeds.

3) Committed

They become more involved in the commenting or send audio comments in.

4) Catalyst

They become creators, they produce content for you maybe in podcasting they become reporters, regular contributors.

I love this cycle approach as a way of thinking of moving your listeners around the cycle. You are wanting them to become committed, to become creators to build the sense of community. At that point they become great sales people for your show, they are evangelists for your work. They add to the content that you are producing because they are helping to create dialogue, to develop the show to the next level.
