Podcasting for Profit

by

My good friend Leesa Barnes has now launched her new book Podcasting for Profit - you can download 2 chapters here at her site. cimg0204.JPG

In the book, Leesa shares a proven 7 step plan to help individuals and businesses generate income through audio and video podcasting. I was privileged to be used as a case study, over at The Engaging Brand! The 7 steps are explained in detail but in summary are
1) Assess - work out your goals
2) Plan - your next steps
3) Launch - your podcast
4) Grow - your audience
5) Profit - 106 pages dedicated to ways of creating income streams!
6) Measure - your success to your goals in the right way
7) Optimise - Reviewing progress to ensure that you are maximising your return

Well done Leesa on a great first book - if you want to check out an interview with her then check out The Podcast Sisters as there is an interview coming up on the show.

I don’t know nearly enough to write a book on the subject, but my two cents (Canadian cents, they’re worth just as much!) would be to use a free hosting service and deal with advertisers as little as possible from a production standpoint. Podango is the only site I know of that offers both, but that could very well be my own bias.

    Other opinions/options? Ooo

Seth, it’s much more than just avoiding advertisers and sponsors. I have never used ads in my own podcast, yet I’ve been gainfully self-employed as a podcasting consultant for nearly 2-years.

What’s my secret? Using a few different ways to make money podcasting. While my book explains all the ways podcasters are making money podcasting, I only chose 3 ways and I’m kicking myself for not implementing one way alot sooner. I consult, teach, sell products and develop continuity programs. All these help me to make money using a podcast.

Whether you use a hosted service like Podango, or an independent solution using Wordpress, or whether you use ads or not in your podcast, the point is develop a multiple streams approach with your podcast.

My question to you is if you don’t want to use ads to generate an income through podcasting, what will you do instead? If you’re stumped, you’re like the thousands or so podcasters I meet all the time who tell me the same thing. They say that they don’t want to splash ads in their podcast, yet are confused as how to make money.
