Podcasting for Profit

by Anna Farmery

I was honoured today to speak to Leesa Barnes in a round table discussion with some great European podcasters - Karin Hogh, Alex Bellinger, Krishna De, to name a few, on how people are podcasting for profit. Leesa is busy writing a book which we are all eagerly awaiting to understand how people are making money from podcasting!

For me there are 3 main ways to think about making money from podcasting

1) Providing services to podcasting - directories, production, coaching etc
2) Monetarising your podcast - through affiliate links, advertising etc
3) Using the podcast as an advertising or marketing tool to sell your other services.

You need to be clear about which area you fit into and then plan how you are going to achieve that aim. I also like to see podcasting as not only driving sales but also reducing costs. Costs in terms of advertising, development, communication etc Profit is a function of the two.

  1. Krishna De Says:

Anna - yes the subject of profitable podcasting is an interesting one.

I really encourage my clients to consider re-purposing and leveraging their content and that is something you can also do with your podcasts.

As an example, you could create an audio product or ebook/book/study programme through repurposing your podcasts and creating informaiton products.

I think many people are looking literally how each podcast will turn into revenue - however as you point out there are so many other options - including of course your podcast being a great expression of your personal brand.

And of course great content can lead to all sorts of wonderful opportunities for you as the podcaster or as the guest on a podcast. Examples include being asked to speak at an event/conference(as I know you have), attracting clients and new strategic alliances and JV’s.

Profitable podcasting - the opportunities are endless!

  2. Leesa Barnes Says:

The opportunities are endless, but it’s still sad that the majority of people - podcasters and non - still think the only way to make money podcasting is through advertising and sponsorship. While writing the book, I discovered some new and interesting ways that people are making money podcasting. I was even surprised by some of the strategies.

  3. Anna Farmery Says:

Great points - obviously Leesa we just have to wait for your book!

Krishna totally agree - podcasting has brought me so many opportunities that no other medium would have given me,
