Stop the Popping of P’s and B’s in Podcasting
The technical word is plosives - a rush of air when you say a p or a b. The most common way of stopping this, is to use a fabric mesh on the front of the microphone. The mesh then spread the air before it hits the microphone - removing the popping sounds.
If you are investing in a microphone it really is worth investing a small amount for a mesh.
A couple of free options are
- Soften your voice by sucking in the hard consonants rather than spitting them out. Not very natural though!
- Don’t talk directly into the microphone - called being Off Axis. This way the gust of air does not hit the microphone directly.
I have not got a mesh as my goal is to keep all my equipment as cheap as possible for this labour of love. I try not to speak directly into the microphone - don’t always get it right, but hey if your content is good then listeners can cope with a little popping!!

I put my novels on CD for friends who can’t read all that well and man I wish I wouldn have known the little tricks here! Thanks for the little “tips and tricks.” They’ll help a lot in the future.
